GE Cafe CHS985SELSS vs CHS995SELSS: One Oven or Two

One difference decides this pair. The GE Cafe CHS985SELSS is a 30-inch slide-in induction range with a single 5.3 cu. ft. convection oven and a warming drawer underneath. The CHS995SELSS is the same cooktop and the same cabinet with that drawer space given over to a second oven. Everything else people argue about — the induction surface, the finish, the app — is common to both.

What is the real difference between the CHS985SELSS and the CHS995SELSS?

A slide-in range has a fixed volume under the cooktop, and every manufacturer spends it one of two ways. The GE Cafe CHS985SELSS spends it on one tall cavity and keeps a warming drawer below. The CHS995SELSS splits it into two cavities that heat and clean independently.

That is not a small distinction in daily use. A single 5.3 cu. ft. cavity takes a full-size roasting pan, a turkey and three racks at once. Two divided cavities take neither of the first two comfortably, and in exchange they let you hold one dish at 200°F while another bakes at 425°F, with no smell and no heat crossing between them.

So the question is not which range is better. It is whether your cooking is usually one big thing or usually two different things at once.

The cooking surface is the same on both models; only the space below the cooktop differs.

Who should choose the double oven?

Buy the CHS995SELSS if these describe your kitchen:

  • You regularly run two temperatures at once — a weeknight sheet pan while a casserole finishes, or a dessert going in while dinner holds.
  • You cook small more often than you cook large. Preheating the smaller upper cavity for a tray of vegetables uses a fraction of the energy and half the time of firing up a full-size oven.
  • You host, and the bottleneck at your holidays is oven slots rather than burners.

Buy the CHS985SELSS if these do instead:

  • You roast whole birds, bake sheet-pan batches on three racks, or use full-depth pans that need one uninterrupted cavity.
  • You actually use a warming drawer — for proofing dough, for holding plates, for keeping a first course warm while the main finishes.
  • You would rather have one oven you never have to think about than two you have to choose between.

Neither choice affects the cooking surface, so nobody is giving up induction performance either way. What induction does and does not do, and the handful of behaviors that surprise new owners, is in our guide to GE induction range issues.

What do both models share?

Both are 30-inch slide-in, front-control ranges finished in stainless steel, which means both drop into a standard cutout and both put their knobs and display at the front edge rather than on a back panel. Both are induction, so both need magnetic cookware and both want a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized for the range rather than a shared one.

Both also carry WiFi through the Cafe app, and it is worth being clear about what that does. Remote preheat, timers and cycle notifications are genuinely useful in a two-oven house. Diagnostics over the app are not a substitute for a service call: they can tell you a fault occurred, not which part raised it.

And both, because they are slide-in ranges rather than freestanding ones, depend on a countertop cutout that is square and a floor that is level. Our GE range buying guide covers the format question in general, and the installation rules matter more on a slide-in than most buyers expect.

Where does the CHS900P2MS1 fit in?

A third number turns up constantly in the same shopping list, and it is worth placing. The CHS900P2MS1 is a smart 30-inch slide-in induction range with a warming drawer — the same architecture as the CHS985SELSS — but it carries an 11-inch, 3,700-watt induction element and comes in a matte finish rather than stainless.

That big element is the reason to consider it: an 11-inch ring boils a stockpot and heats a large skillet edge to edge in a way a standard element does not. It is also the part we see wear on this model, and it is tested on its own before anyone blames the whole cooktop control. If your cooking is built around one big pan, that model deserves a look next to the other two. The full entries are at CHS900P2MS1, CHS985SELSS and CHS995SELSS.

One caution on numbers: if the badge inside your range door reads CGS995SELSS rather than CHS995SELSS, that is a different range with a different fuel, and none of the induction advice here applies to it. Read the rating plate, not the listing title.

Does a second oven mean twice the service?

Not twice, but it does change how a fault is diagnosed, and buyers rarely hear this part. On a double-oven range each cavity has its own temperature sensor, its own element set and its own door-lock circuit, so each cavity is diagnosed separately: an F3 or F4 sensor fault and the F5, F8 and FF control faults are traced to the cavity that raised them, not to the range as a whole.

The practical effect is good news more often than bad. A CHS995SELSS with a failed upper sensor is still a usable range while the part is on order, because the lower cavity is untouched. A CHS985SELSS with the same fault is out of action. Against that, there are two sets of sensors and two door locks to age, and a double oven puts more heat behind one control panel.

Note also that induction cooktops do not report faults in the numeric family the ovens use. A cookware-not-detected or overheating warning on the surface is specific to the model and its manual, and it is not part of the F-code list the oven side uses.

What should you check before you commit to either one?

Measure the cutout width and the depth from the wall to the counter edge, confirm the breaker feeding the range and the receptacle type, and check that the floor under the front feet is level — a slide-in that rocks will not seal against the countertop. Then decide the real question: one large cavity plus a drawer, or two independent cavities.

When either range needs attention later, our technicians carry the diagnostics for both cavities and for the induction surface, and a visit starts from a standard diagnostic call with the estimate confirmed before any work begins. We are an independent repair company, not a factory service arm. For anything that needs hands on the appliance, see GE range repair, schedule a visit or call (844) 524-4561.
