How a GE appliance reports a problem
GE publishes its own error-code system for most of its electronic-control appliances, and the format differs by category — refrigerators and freezers use short two-letter alerts, dishwashers, ovens, and microwaves use “C” or “F” codes, and washers and dryers use “E” codes on electronic-control models. Three categories — wine coolers, range hoods, and most built-in ice makers — publish no numeric code at all and are read entirely by symptom. The code-bearing categories
A refrigerator shows FF (freezer too warm), CC (fridge too warm), dE (missed defrost), PF (power-failure reset), or CI (check icemaker); many basic models show no display at all. A freezer shows E7-E9 on electronic-control upright models. A washer shows E22, E23, E30, E42, E45, or E58 on electronic-control models. A dryer shows E1-E3. A dishwasher shows GE’s published C1-C8 family plus PF, H2O, and Leak Detected/999. A range and an oven share the same Electronic Oven Control F-codes on the oven side. A microwave shows F1-F6 and F10.
The symptom-only categories
Three GE categories publish no numeric code for the general case. A wine cooler and a range hood are read entirely by symptom, and a built-in ice maker module shows only its host refrigerator’s CI alert — the one documented exception is the standalone GE Profile Opal countertop nugget ice maker, which shows its own E1-E3/T3 codes.
When to reset and when to call
For many problems the homeowner step is the same: power-cycle at the breaker for 30 to 60 seconds and watch the panel. A PF or 888/8888 clock reset is not a problem at all. A persistent sensor, control, or drain-related code, a door-lock failure, or any gas burner that smells of gas with the knob off calls for an experienced, independent technician with the correct OEM or high-quality replacement part.
