How a GE microwave reports a fault

GE over-the-range and countertop microwaves display GE’s own published “F” codes on the control panel.

GE’s documented microwave codes

F1 means the thermal sensor circuit is open, and F2 means it is shorted. F3 flags a shorted touchpad. F4 means the humidity sensor circuit is open, and F5 means it is shorted. F6 flags a shorted temperature probe circuit, and F10 flags a shorted touch screen on models with one. A Probe message means the meat probe is open or unplugged. 888, 8888, or PF simply mean the clock reset after a power interruption — none of these are faults.

What to check, and when to call

Clear an 888/PF display by resetting the clock; it does not indicate a problem. Unplug and reseat the meat probe for a Probe message that persists with nothing connected. A recurring F1-F6 or F10 code needs an experienced, independent technician with the correct OEM or high-quality replacement part — microwaves also carry a high-voltage capacitor that can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged, so this is not a homeowner-safe repair.
