How a GE refrigerator reports a fault

Most GE, GE Profile, and Hotpoint refrigerators with an electronic control panel display a short two-letter code rather than a numeric fault code. Many older or basic single-door models have no display at all and are diagnosed by symptom instead.

GE’s published refrigerator codes

FF means the freezer compartment is running too warm. CC means the fresh-food compartment is running too warm. dE flags that a defrost cycle has not run in the expected window. PF simply means the unit lost power and needs the clock and settings reset — it is not a fault. CI asks you to check the icemaker. tC and tF are not errors at all; they are the TurboCool and TurboFreeze indicator lights.

What to check, and when to call

Clear a PF code by resetting the display; it does not indicate damage. For FF or CC, first confirm the door seals fully and the vents inside are not blocked by food, then check that the condenser coils underneath or behind the unit are free of dust. A dE code that keeps returning after a defrost cycle, a CI alert with no ice production, or an FF/CC code that persists after clearing the vents points to the evaporator fan, defrost heater, thermistor, or sealed system, and calls for an experienced, independent technician with the correct OEM or high-quality replacement part.
