How a GE dryer reports a fault

GE electronic-control dryers display a short alarm code. Older timer-dial dryers have no display and are diagnosed by symptom.

GE’s documented dryer codes

E1 flags a thermistor failure. E2 means the high-limit thermostat has tripped, or the inlet thermistor is shorted. E3 means the exhaust or outlet temperature is running too high, which almost always points at a blocked or restricted vent.

What to check, and when to call

Clean the full vent path and the lint screen first for an E3 code — restricted airflow drives most over-temperature alerts and is also a fire-safety issue if ignored. A recurring E1 or E2 thermistor code after confirming the vent is clear needs an experienced, independent technician with the correct OEM or high-quality replacement part. On a timer-dial dryer with no display, a load that will not dry points at the same vent-blockage or heating-element causes; a drum that will not turn points at the belt, rollers, or motor.
