How a GE washer reports a fault

GE electronic-control front-load and top-load washers display a short alarm code on the panel. Older mechanical-dial top-loaders, and legacy GE GLC/Hydrowave models, have no digital display and signal a fault with a flashing light pattern instead.

GE’s documented washer codes

E22 means the tub did not fill within the expected time — check the supply valves. E23 is a drain-timeout or flood-protect condition; the washer is not draining fast enough. E30 means the control is getting no signal from the drain pump. E42 flags a motor or inverter overload, often from an unbalanced or oversized load. E45 means the control believes the door is locked when it should not be, usually load-related. E58 is a main-control fault.

What to check, and when to call

Confirm both supply taps are fully open for E22, and check the drain hose for kinks or the filter for debris for E23 or E30. Redistribute an unbalanced load for E42 or a recurring E45. A recurring E30, E42, E45, or E58 code that returns after a reset needs an experienced, independent technician with the correct OEM or high-quality replacement part.
