Reading the model and serial number
The rating plate is on a side wall inside the fresh-food section, and it carries both a model number and a serial number — the two tell a technician different things. The model number encodes the body style, capacity, and finish (WW is white, SS or FS is stainless, BB is black, ES is slate); the exact character map is revised yearly in GE’s own Nomenclature Guide, so we do not assume any single letter is fixed. The serial number is what actually dates the unit: the first letter is the month and the second is the year, though the year letter repeats roughly every twelve years, so we confirm the decade against the Owner’s Manual print date or the feature set.
